British supermarket chain Waitrose has launched a trial of automated, temperature-controlled lockers for online grocery orders in third party locations across the country.

The trial for the 'Click and Collect' service is expected to be available in ten locations, out of which two have been set up at present at TfL London Underground Stations Chorleywood and Ickenham, with eight more planned to launched later.

Waitrose intends to set those up at other TfL Stations besides Gatwick North and Gatwick South Terminal Long Stay Car Parks.

Waitrose e-commerce proposition development manager Andrew Newton said: "This reflects the changing way that our customers live and shop, with convenience a prime motivation for shoppers in the 21st century.

"One of the dominant trends in retailing is the growth of the 'transumer' - who wants to shop while they are on the go - and we hope this exciting innovation will appeal to those with busy lifestyles."

With availability of ecommerce options, Waitrose allows online orders or orders to be placed through smartphone applications.

Customers will receive personalised PIN on placing respective orders.

The identification codes or PIN will be used during collection of the products from the ambient, chilled and frozen lockers where they will be stored.

The temperature controlled lockers can be refilled several times within a day, with orders placed before 11.45am to be collected by the next day.

The delivery options for the Click & Collect automated locker service will be same as other delivery options across the supermarket's branches.
