Amazon Logistics to open 13th UK delivery station

Amazon Logistics is to open a delivery station at Washington in Sunderland – its 13th in UK. It will work with nine independent delivery companies to deliver orders to customers across the North East of England.

Around 20 people will be employed directly by Amazon at the site which is due to open later this month. Some 200 drivers will be hired by the nine regional delivery companies.

Amazon Logistics is a technology and logistics platform designed to empower independent local, regional and national delivery companies across the UK to deliver Amazon parcels to customers seven days of the week.

Jamie Stephenson, UK director for Amazon Logistics, said: “Amazon Logistics adds capacity and flexibility to Amazon’s delivery network, enabling us to meet the delivery needs of customers. Amazon Logistics is also helping independent local delivery companies to grow their businesses by providing state of the art technology to deliver Amazon orders.”

Amazon’s Sunday deliveries have grown by more than four times in the past year – an increase made possible in large part due to the introduction of Amazon Logistics. Amazon Prime members receive unlimited one-day delivery of items, and can also have their parcels delivered on Sunday at no additional charge.

* Amazon has now invested more than £1 billion in its UK operations. Last month Amazon set out plans to open a 310,000 sq ft fulfilment centre In Dunstable in the autumn, creating 500 permanent jobs. Dunstable will join the eight existing fulfilment centres in UK, which are located in Doncaster, Dunfermline, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Marston Gate, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay. More than 7,000 permanent employees work at these centres.
