Sainsbury’s [IRDX RSBR] says this will be its biggest Christmas yet for online orders. It says more than 30% more food orders have been placed over the internet for the week leading up to the big day. As a result it’s preparing to deliver more than 100,000 orders in the three days to December 23.
It says the growth has come thanks to cost-saving initiatives including £1 delivery slots and free delivery after 2pm on orders of £100 or more, and its Delivery Pass subscription scheme.
Robbie Feather, online director at Sainsbury’s, said: “Our online business is firmly established and growing well. We’ve listened to what our customers have told us, and over the past year we’ve updated our website, improved the recipe and ideas section and lowered delivery costs – all this helps our customers save precious time and money as they shop. Click & Collect gives people added choice, enabling them to shop with us wherever and whenever they want. This will be our busiest online Christmas ever, and we’re geared up to give people the quality, service and customer experience they expect from Sainsbury’s.”
Around 40% of orders have been placed for store collection using a bespoke Christmas ordering website optimised for use from a mobile phone.
Shoppers can also collect from seven London Underground station car parks.
